Indonesia has a very diverse population with over 242 million people. It is the world’s 4th most populated country.
LEFT: Citra (one of our teacher assistants) at her wedding.
RIGHT: Two ISR students learn a dance in our Indonesian Studies class.
Indonesia has the world’s largest population of Muslims. Mosques are commonly seen in Indonesia. Mosques are used primarily for prayer.
The people of Indonesia are very talented. The art is as diverse as the population of people. Batik is a very popular fabric that is made in Indonesia.
Soccer and badminton are the two favorite sports in Indonesia. Pencak silat is a traditional martial art that is popular in West Sumatra.
The language we speak at school is English because this is an American school. Some of the local languages we speak here are Bugis Macassare, Minag Kabou, and the main language is Bahasa.
Here are some words in Bahasa: ”Hello nama ku Puspa.”
(Which means “Hello my name is Puspa.”)

1 tbs lemon juice
Fried union slices
0,5 cup coconut milk
Grind:
150 gram peanut (cook in the oven)
2 red chilly peppers
3 unions
2 garlic (grind)
salt
Directions:
Mix chicken, soya bean sauce, salt and garlic. Let it sit for 2 hours.
Peanut sauce:
Sauté the grounded ingredient, add water and coconut milk. Add lemon juice.
Take 4 tbs of the ingredient and put it on a plate.
Put the chicken mix in the skewers. Mix them with the peanut sauce on the plate.
Cook it on the barbeque oven.
Serve:
Put the chicken on a plate, pour the peanut sauce on the top. Add fried onion slices.

Our school mascot is the Sumatran Tiger. Most people don’t know about the tigers in Sumatra, so here are some interesting facts: Sumatran tigers are the smallest species of tigers. Their small size makes it easier to move through the jungle. Their stripes are narrower than other species. Sumatran tigers have webbing between their toes to help them swim faster. Now, only 500 live in the wild. They live in our jungles and many years ago used to run freely. We live in what used to be a jungle but now has lots of oil palm plantations.
Here is our school logo designed by one of our students.
Our cheerleading squad is named after the tiger, which can be in jungles where we live.

Sumatra is a mountainous island in Indonesia. We live in the capitol city of the province Riau, which is Pekanbaru. Riau is on the eastern Sumatran coast and the Siak River runs through it. Pekanbaru is about 25-30 minutes away from our camp. Our coordinates are 0°35’30. 56”N and 101° 26’24.102”E.

In Sumatra the climate is usually hot and humid. We live in a tropical rain forest very close to the equator and it rains very often. Here there are two major seasons: the wet season and the dry season. During the afternoon it can get very warm here. The temperature in Rumbai is normally 85-90 degrees F or 30-33 degrees C.

Our school is surrounded by rain forest and is in a small camp. We have around 50 students in our school. The grades go from pre-school to middle school. We have one computer lab, one science lab, one gym, and around 6 rooms for classes. My classroom is the science lab. It has a lot of items like microscopes, a garden outside, and others. We also have pets like 2 snakes, one is named Francis and the other is M&M, we feed them rats and sometimes mice. We also have a few goldfish, turtles, and hamsters. Sometimes we find bugs like a rhinoceros beetle so we keep it and let it go later. This is where I have my science and math class. Our teacher is Mr. Anderson for 5/6-grade science and 6th grade math. He is a good teacher and knows a lot. A lot of our teachers here in our school are very nice and kind. I hope you learned a little bit about our school! Thank you for reading this!
